I promised to walk with him a mile
To help carry the burden he bore
In return I didn’t expect even a smile
For a garment of sadness he wore
To walk in silence I thought was better
The cause of his sadness I didn’t enquire
He may well be a burdened debtor
I was afraid, more help he may require
At the end he looked at me and said
When burdened I’ll walk with you to the end
Drooped in shame I turned red
He smiled, turned and away went
