Fortress

Fortress

We were once a glorified fortress,

standing tall despite the odds.

Until you shattered our sanctuary,

revealing all the facades.

You said we needed to let the breeze in,

that we were strong enough to endure.

I begged you to be wary of the wolves,

warned you our exposure was premature.

Blind in your faith, you tore down our protection,

you paid no heed to me like a deaf man, in the time it mattered most.

You told me not to fret so, I was a fool to doubt.

You brushed away my pride, no matter how much I reproached.

Corruption crept in like a snake and ripped you away,

it left me desolate, clutching my delusions.

Pleading with the shadows, I imagined being you,

roaming for years alone, satisfied with my illusions.

Our fortress is rumored to now be haunted,

they hear a girl who wails with the breeze.

The walls have collapsed, yet no one dares to enter.

It is the abode of absent hope and lingering unease.

People say she's insane and her curse is catching,

everything living has been forsaken, she rambles destitute.

Another used to dwell with her, but he exposed her lunacy,

now her mind, her heart, her soul have all been reduced.

She shuns the light and lives in the night,

he was her sun but his rays have been erased.

A castle of the dead, her home has become her tomb,

Her spirit and essence have long been defaced.

It used to be formidable now it has all but crumbled.

All the cracks in the walls are etched onto her skin.

She is the ghost of a queen, betrayed by whom she trusted.

A fortress of her own now, nobody will ever be able to get in.
