Caught In The Rat-Race

Caught In The Rat-Race

She looked at her watch, four minutes to go, and she would turn thirty-eight,

She sat by the window; her gaze fixed at the dark night.

She pondered over her life, neither was it too thrilling,

Nor was it filled with too many hardships, but entrapped within the rat race it was, rather, more of monotony.

Taught to aim higher since her childhood, her head was always held high,

Her eyes which looked straight all the time failed to notice what lay under,

She knew only the "best", the "better" remained unknown to her.

Soon the clock struck twelve, messages from social media flooded her inbox,

She shoved her phone aside and opened the old box instead,

She recalled she was eight then, it has been almost three decades.

She held the old birthday cards in her hand, took the smell between their folds,

They were gifts from her real friends long back, she realized, several years since have rolled.

Most of her friends are married now, some of them having a child or two even,

While she on her birthday night was all alone, dull and sad with none to enliven.

Fun -she had always set aside in the quest for a better future,

Failing to realize the present is much nearer, future-way farther.

She brooded over-how did she end up alone?

She realized she was caught in the rat race, the race although successfully won,

Yet left her with the success that she could share with none.
