Dinesh suddenly woke up from his sleep. He thought he had heard the dull thud and swift click of their bed room door. He had seen the curtains swish and felt as if someone had just been in the room. He dismissed the thought and  went to the bathroom and turned on the shower.  The cold jet hit him and he felt a piercing pain in his heart. All he could do was think about Anita. They were happy. He somehow loved to see her cry and ask for forgiveness. He loved playing mind games with her. He loved overpowering her. He just could not believe that Anita had fallen in love with him. Her tears gave him the reassurance that she was all his. Over the years he had become kind and had felt an all consuming love for Anita. The dark haired woman in his bedroom with whom he had started the affair 6 months back was still in deep sleep. Dinesh stared out of the large window into the moonless night. Why did Anita have to be so impulsive? Why did Anita have to be so careless? Why did Anita always want to surprise him? Why did Anita have to leave him?

Anita stared  at her husband  Dinesh spooning the dark haired fair woman in the dim lights of their apartment. Both looked peaceful sleeping. Anita wanted to scream, to tear them apart, to gouge out their eyes. Years ago Anita and Dinesh were in love . Dinesh couldn't keep his hands off her. Anita had fought with her parents over Dinesh  and had eloped with him . They got married. They were happy. Dinesh was the typical over possessive jealous boyfriend. He always insisted on knowing what she would wear to office, who were her colleagues, who was she talking to over the phone. He fought with her if she took a lift from a male colleague , if she shook hands with a male counterpart. His words hurt Anita. Yet she felt nothing but love for him. She loved him passionately. He was her soul mate. Over the years Dinesh had calmed down and had proved to be a good husband.

Anita felt suffocated , she had to get out of that apartment. She felt she could not breathe anymore. She was used to not breathing. She had died last year. What she was not used to was seeing Dinesh with another woman.
