The tree stood alone at the edge of a courtyard of a big house. The house was occupied by a large family. The tree had seen many generations of the family for the few hundred years of its existence. The family members had enjoyed its shade and fruit over a period of time. The tree had also got benevolence of the family. The family had taken care of its water and pruning needs.

Its health was not as it used to be. It had long ago stopped growing fruit, but the shade was still there. It knew that it did not have many years left on this earth. Soon it had to leave its mortal existence as it had seen many of the members of the family leaving for the after-world.

Today there appeared to some celebrations in the family. Soon the new-born child was brought to pay obeisance to it as had been the custom of the family. The tree reminisced over the previous generations of the family. This child would probably outlive it.

The tree knew that there was life after it shed its mortal body. Its body would soon mingle with earth providing wood and fertiliser to the earth and would still remain in the form of soil. The same happened to human beings. Nobody’s existence was completely destroyed. Some part of everyone remained on the earth. The new life evolved out of the ashes of the old life.

The tree knew that there was afterlife for everyone, even if it was not in the form everyone imagined.
