You’ll be immersed in the practice as you slowly transition into being a teacher.
If you’ve ever been in a yoga related conversation, you’ve probably heard people talk about the “yogafication” of yoga. What this means, is that yoga is becoming more and more mainstream and looks more like the typical fitness practices we see in gyms and studios all over the country. For those who are interested in pursuing a career as a yoga teacher, it can be helpful to have a real-life experience teaching in this yogafied environment. There are a few different ways you could do this, but one good option is through your YTT program. In your personal studies, you’ll get the chance to experience yoga from a variety of different perspectives. You’ll be able to explore different styles of practice and meet a variety of teachers.
This will give you a good insight into how different styles and teachers approach the practice. You’ll learn the foundations of teaching. There are two parts to teaching yoga: the practice and the leadership of that practice. While we might like to think that teaching yoga is “being a magical yogi who makes people feel great and have a beautiful, clear mind,” teaching yoga isn’t just a set of skills and practices you can pull out of your bag of tricks. Teaching yoga is more than just showing up and doing a set of postures. Instead, you have the responsibility of helping students navigate their unique challenges and inspire them to find strength in their lives by being present and mindful. During your training, you’ll learn what it means to be a yoga teacher from a variety of different perspectives. You’ll learn how to grow as a yoga teacher and lead practices. Yoga poses are more than just about getting into the right position for a given exercise. Yoga poses are also about how we carry ourselves and what we choose to focus on during our practices. As you’re completing your training with The Yoga Room, you’ll have the opportunity to meet a variety of different yogis from all around the world.
This is an invaluable opportunity to meet teachers from different backgrounds and learn more about what motivates them to practice. Leading practices is another part of becoming a teacher that will require you to grow both as a person and as a yoga teacher. Leading practices means creating safe spaces where students can practice yoga. It also means leading your students in those practices, which can be difficult to do when you’re a beginner and have never led a practice before. You’ll feel confident and equipped to teach. I’m sure you’ve heard it before, but it’s so true. When you feel confident and equipped to teach, students will respond to you. The more confident you are about yourself, the more you’ll be able to take the confidence of your students and use it to empower them to become the best yoga practitioners they can be. When you’re ready to start teaching, it’s important to ensure you’re prepared. This includes ensuring you’ve taken the time to research programs, find a teachers’ group that works for you and are in a place emotionally where you’re ready to go. One of the best ways to ensure you’re ready is through your training program. When you’re in your program, you’ll have the opportunity to meet other teachers and hear their stories. This will give you an opportunity to hear what students have to say and see how they respond to your teaching.
