Diary of a new mother

My entire series of these 21 days will be based on my experience of being in this lockdown and staying home as a first-time mother of a 5-month-old baby, Anvay.

Dear Diary,

‘Ye Dalgona, Dalgona, kya hai???’

‘Kuch nahi, the good old #phetihuicoffee.’

We tried the #Instagram famous #Covi19-popular, Dalgona coffee that became viral with this lockdown fever. When everyone was trying this and also putting up great photographs I told Yd that we should also try. making this Thankfully we had enough stock of instant coffee, milk, and sugar. With everyone wearing a culinary hat at home during the lockdown, ingredients used for baking, making sweets, or exotic dishes were getting exhausted in the supermarkets as well as in the local Kirana stores. When we went to ‘Aunty shop’, we got to know that sugar was being sold loose because the factory did not have workers to put them in a package.

Dalgona coffee is easy to make, just needs a little effort to whip if we don’t have a whipping machine and tastes good, especially if you are an Irish coffee fan, you’ll enjoy the taste more. We make the cold sweetened milk version and also the hot sweetened milk version. It was a refreshing change for the day that replaced our usual evening cup of coffee and tea. If we take a sip, the sweetened milk first seeps into our tongue, then while it goes to our throat, we get the mild taste of the whipped thick creamy coffee which lasts till we take the next sip. Not everyone will like the taste but we all enjoyed it at home. Our evening went on as we kept discussing Dalgona coffee with parents and we enjoyed raising a toast of this coffee in the name of Anvay. We had an early dinner so that we could switch off the lights for the 9 minutes, 9 PM lights-out call, as instructed by our Prime Minister. We all went to the terrace and were surprised to see the neighbors also do the same. Many had lit 9 diyas/ candles outside their house, there was also a show of firecrackers which we could see from the terrace. Some extended it beyond 9 PM and some stuck to their timing. We didn’t want Anvay to stay in the dark for long so we brought him back home and after 9 minutes switched on all the lights in the house. Thankfully, he did not get scared when it got very dark on the terrace. The response of the public to the PM’s address just shows how influential his words are on the masses. Amidst all the criticism his ideas have garnered he emerged as a strong leader; when he speaks, people do-follow.
