Albino Cats

Humans and animals both produce the substance melanin, which is the one responsible for pigmentation. Melanin gives skin, eyes, and hair their unique color features. Albino cats have red eyes and white fur due to the absence of melanin.

The red-eye color is because of the absence of pigmentation that normally gives the eye its color, like green, blue, or perhaps even gold. But instead, what you see is light being reflected off the eye’s back where there are blood vessels, thus the red eyes.

The tyrosinase (TYR) gene is the one responsible for making the body create melanin. In albino cats, the TYR gene is either damaged or just not there. This is a genetic defect that can only happen in a cat should both parents pass the defective gene on to the kitten.

Your pet will benefit from regular health and wellness checks at your vet's Derby.
