Yellow Leaves

Yellow Leaves

I look at her sometimes
While she's right beside me,
Staring at yellow leaves, her thoughts far in the distance,
And she explains to me her theories about yellow leaves being beautiful.

Somedays she likes to stay quiet
And watch the city lights and the loud traffic
But her silence isn't strange, it's golden.
I listen as she tells me how empty she feels at night
I listen as she tells me, she's broken.
I stay quiet because I hope,
I hope she knows she's wonderful.

Sometimes I watch her smiling,
At her favourite white dress
Telling me which shoes would match
Cursing a few designers,
Admiring a new shade of lipstick
And in the midst of it all,
She'd look at me and laugh a little
And I'd smile because I hope,
I hope she knows she's magnificent.

And somedays there's no difference,
Between her and a six year old
She'd tell me how squirrels are just rats with tails
And would laugh with her face so innocent.
And I'd laugh with her because I hope,
I hope she knows she's different.

Sometimes she cries, she cries and tells me
That there's sadness inside her stomach
She's too full yet too hollow.
I watch her as the sorrow reaches her eyes,
as she pours all the words,
She kept sealed beneath her untamed heart.
I watch her and I stay quiet because I hope,
I hope she knows she's a poetry.

I listen to her carefully
When she talks about her favourite books, about the society and politics
About things that matter.
Too often her thoughts are scattered,
So scattered that they make sense.
And I lie beside her in silence because I hope,
I hope she knows she's smart.

There are just a few people,
A few people you meet in your lifetime,
Who make you feel like you're home.
And slowly, without knowing, they disfigure your soul.

And I look at her at this moment
While she's sitting right beside me,
Staring at yellow leaves, her thoughts far in the distance.
And she explains to me yet again,
her theories about yellow leaves being beautiful
And I still just stay quiet, because I hope,
I hope she knows she is beautiful.
