The rules

The rules

Too many people take poetry too seriously:

"There must be verses! There must be rhyme!"

"They must be written in a certain time!"

What fools.

For poetry is merely an assortment of words

Treats in a chocolate box

Let them go, let them fly

To write unrestrained, one must say goodbye

Little kite, big plane, erudite, bit plain.

Do not fence words in, else they will revolt

Do not try to leash them, for they will bolt

To run free, to sightsee, to feel, gee -

That's what poetry is.

So do not listen to blathering about the rules

For walls are made to be knocked down

And poems are written to always rise back up.
