Inside Out

Inside Out

A candle by the window,

A lady looks beyond.

Beyond the pavement,

Beyond the black smoke,

Beyond the needles that pierce the wounded sky,

And, perhaps, beyond the semblance of Life.

She looks back in,

With awe and joy,

As stars melted into dreams,

Whisper to her children.

She looks out again,

Her heart trembling,

As the dreams get trampled,

By the footfalls on the pavement.

She looks back in,

At the enchanted forest,

Where she once plucked flowers out of fairy tales,

And blew wishes into magic wells.

She looks out again,

At a sighing man, homeless,

The Sun setting at dawn,

His wishes still lingering in his tattered hat.

She looks back in,

At chocolate hills.

She snatches a cotton candy from the sky,

And trips over an apple pie.

She looks out again,

At a girl and a dog sharing a doughnut.

Another sandwich thrown away,

The girl gets to it before the dog.

She looks back in,

At stairs that lead to heaven,

And doors that lead to secret gardens.

Light, where the tunnel ends.

She looks out again,

At people climbing stairs that lead to nowhere,

Knocking at doors that can’t be opened,

And driving through tunnels that never end.

A candle by the window,

A lady looks beyond,

She blows away the flame,

And, she looks on.
