The Golden Rose

In days gone by, Vikramaditya , a great king ruled over a prosperous kingdom from his capital at Ujjain. Mighty as the sun - he was a king with immense love for learning as well as for adventure.

King Vikram sat in his court for hours every day, rewarding the virtuous, punishing the evil doers, and encouraging scholars, poets, musicians, and artists.One day Vikram was meeting with several great princes, a hunter came running in and said “sir, in the Anjana mountain a huge wild boar has came. We are scared because of it. Please save us “

Immediately the king along with all the princes left for the Anjana mountain in search of the wild boar. With a lot of hardship they were able to find and they started chasing it. The princes were not able to follow it but king Vikram have a good chase and saw it enter a cave.

He followed the boar inside. When he went inside , he was surprised to find a town made up of gold , but the gold was fading away slowly. He went on touring the town until he reached a palace which has totally lost all its shine.

When he entered a palace, he saw a king sitting on the throne. The king introduced himself as Maha Bali the son of Virochana. When Vikram introduced himself the king expressed great happiness in being able to receive such an honoured guest. Vikram told the king that the pleasure was his because he was able to meet Bali, with whom lord Vishnu himself came to beg.

Maha Bali inquired Vikram as to why he has came there. When he said he came simply, Maha Bali told him that he himself wanted to see the great king Vikramadhithya and sent a wild boar to bring him here.

Then Maha Bali told him that he had heard many stories of courage, intelligence and generosity of king Vikram. So, he himself wanted to see if they are true or not. Then Maha Bali told him that he has to bring the golden rose to him. When Vikram asked him why he needed it, Maha Bali said “do you see the gold fading away, it is because a giant has stolen the rose from our kingdom and if we do not get the golden rose on time, the gold will fade forever” he finished sadly. Then Vikram asked where will he find it,”you will find it in the dark forest outside the town” 

It was almost dark. Vikram was going deep into the forest but there was no sign of the rose. He went deeper and that was when he saw it simmering and shinning in the dark .he went to pick it up, but was stopped by a loud snore that he heard behind him. He turned to see a giant standing in front of him “ ah! Another one to take the rose “ he said laughing. Vikram quickly took out his sword , ready to fight him “ you are very brave to come here, but you must defeat me to take the rose “ 

the giant said then he took his sword and all of sudden attacked Vikram, but he blocked the giant even though he was so huge and powerful than him. The giant tried again but Vikram again blocked him.

The giant was frustrated as no one had never fought him back so well. The giant tried again but this time he made an intelligent move and Vikram was unable to block him. He was injured but never gave up. He stood up and attacked the giant but the giant blocked him so, he tried again and this time succeeded. The giant was defeated, his sword was on the floor . “you fought very well.I would be blessed to know your name great warrior.” he said

“I am Vikramadthithya, the king of Ujjain “ Vikram said.

“The king of Ujjain, I have heard a lot about your bravery and I got the pleasure to see it myself” he said “you defeated me, here is your reward, “the giant said giving him the rose

When Vikram returned to the cave and gave him the rose, Maha Bali was sitting on his throne “I knew you that you were the only one who could get past the giant “he said smiling . Vikram gave him the rose and turned to leave but Maha Bali stopped him and told him to ask for any presents.when he said that he needed nothing. The king gave him a juice drinking which an old man can become a youth and a seed from which a tree will grow in seconds and it will have golden fruits. 

While he was returning back an old and very poor Brahmin and his son met him and asked for wealth. When Vikram said that he had nothing except a juice that will make old ones young and a seed from which a tree will grow that will have golden fruits. then he asked them to choose one of them.
