Grandma Is Fading Away

Grandma Is Fading Away

Grandma is fading away.

She is ninety-one. or maybe two.

No one seems to remember.

Peramma says it’s her birthday this month.

By the Malayalam calendar.

Maybe February the fifth by the English.

She will turn ninety-two or maybe three.

She can’t remember.

Grandma is fading away.

She has buried a son.

Her eldest born.

And two sons-in-law, and all her brothers and sisters.

Six of them.

Death creeps along her lineage.

And grandpa’s first wife.

She buried her too.

Now she is fading away.

We sold the house.

And her little plot of farm.

The two cows and eight hens had to go too.

And we took her to the city with us.

Where she ate spaghetti with her fingers.

And then ordered a repeat.

But now grandma is fading away.

Ah, my favorite grandson.

She popped her head on her elbow.

Cataract eyes stared at me from deep hollows.

Would you have a spot of brandy on you?

My grandma.

She is fading away.

*Peramma- elder aunt
