The world's first democracy was established by Emperor Chandragupta Maurya. He never bowed to Aryan culture and their Vedic religion. From the foundation of the Maurya dynasty to the beginning of the Gupta dynasty, Buddhism was predominant in Bengal. During the reign of the Gupta dynasty, the Brahmanical religion came to Bengal; however, it was somewhat different from the Vedic customs and was in harmony with the non-Aryan culture of Bengal. History testifies that the spread of religion in India also started from the soil of Bengal.

বিশ্বের প্রথম গণতন্ত্রের প্রতিষ্ঠা হয়েছিল সম্রাট চন্দ্রগুপ্ত মৌর্যের হাত দিয়ে। তিনি আর্য সংস্কৃতি এবং তাঁদের বৈদিক ধর্মের কাছে নতি স্বীকার করেননি। মৌর্য বংশের প্রতিষ্ঠা থেকে গুপ্তবংশের শুরুর দিকে বাংলার বুকে বৌদ্ধ ধর্মের প্রাধান্য ছিল। গুপ্তবংশের শাসনকালে বাংলায় প্রথম ব্রাহ্মণ ধর্মের আমদানি হয়, তবে তারা আর্যদের বৈদিক রীতিনীতি থেকে একদম স্বতন্ত্র এবং বাংলার অনার্য ধর্মের সাযুজ্যে তৈরি হয়েছিল। ইতিহাস সাক্ষী, ভারতের ইতিহাসে ধর্মের প্রসারও বাংলার মাটি থেকেই শুরু হয়েছিল।
