English… it’s just a medium of language, right? But, we should also understand the importance of this language in these days. It’s an internationally recognized language, which can not only help you to communicate with the world but can open the doors of many career opportunities. This language not only makes you put a great impression on people but also makes you smart both in walk and talk. And, for the law students, it is very important to be well-versed with this language as most of the laws have been written in the English language. So, in order to know the technicalities of law and apply them in the court, it’s very important to be proficient in this language.

So, here is the journey of English in my life. I never use to take part in speaking and writing competitions in my school. I can read English, but thinking and writing it down, there I always use to lack. In my school days, I never read a novel, never seen any English movies, and neither know any English songs. Just academic books were part of my life, which I never enjoyed. I was a good student in my school days, but I always use to score fewer marks in my English subjects, particularly in the grammar portion. Also, I was very shy to ask questions in class as I was not good at expressing well in English.

It was the day when I joined the law school, and my father also came with me there. We four girls from the same state also joined there and the father of a girl asked my father that, “In which college your daughter had studied?” My father told, “D.A.V, Hazaribag.” He replied that “Oh! Then your daughter must not have good English. My son is also studying in D.A.V. And, he is not that good in English, I have spoiled his career. But, my daughter has studied from Sacred Heart, Ranchi, and she is lucky that she is sharing the room with a girl who has pursued her education from Loreto Convent, Ranchi. ”

I saw my father and told, “Yes Papa, uncle is saying true. But, those schools are very costly also.” I was a little upset and asked myself, “Have I taken the correct decision to come here and join this law school.” But, the other side of mine said, "You can." And, after coming to law school, I understood that without English, I do not stand anywhere. And, there were classes in which we were asked to read the judgment and try to analyze that judgment given by the judge is correct according to law and our perspective or not? Some students use to read the cases in such a speed, that when I was there on my first page, they could have completed their second page. And, I wasn’t doing well in my class assignments.

God has always been great to me and this time he has sent a friend here, who not only corrects me, but she also advises me of the different ways to improve my English. She is the best. I have not only written a research paper with her but also participated in two moot court competitions and successfully completed many assignments with her. And, I have always asked her to make me the speaker and not the researcher. These competitions were really out of my comfort zone and were the tough days of my life, but the preparation days taught me a lot. Although, it took me more time than others to learn and understand things, and I did well in those competitions.

When I was in my third year of law school, it was the teacher’s day. We were having an extra class of interpretation of statutes. Ma’am has always been particular about timings, she never allows any student to come inside the class after the attendance call. We all went to class before 10 minutes. I, as always excited to learn something new. But, she told, “Today we will discuss teachers and the impact of them in our lives. So, today everyone will tell about their favorite teachers who you all have met till now.” There were 20 students in the class. And, Ma’am asked everyone to share their experience with all. That day was really nice, everybody without hesitating spoke about their favorite teachers. I was the second last student to speak. When my chance came, I was very articulate and continuous. I told about the journey of the English language in my life.

Me: I want to dedicate this speech to my English teacher who came in my life when I was in my tenth class. I never knew that the English language has so much importance. But, I wasn’t good in English grammar and neither fluent in it. And, also I neither got such friends or companion who were good in English in my school. It was the day of the parents-teacher meeting, he was the one who told my parents that, “Your daughters can do anything in life, but it’s all upon you to give them better grooming and teachings.”

My father smiled and said, “We both husband and wife are not that much educated. Neither have I got time to spend with them. I can only earn and sent them to good schools.” My teacher made a lot of effort for me. Now, here I’m in this law school speaking English in front of you all. Thank you, everyone, for patiently listening to my little story.

My teacher, was a little emotional that day. She gave a little smile and said, “We all are proud of you of what you are today. Take Pride in how much you have achieved. Your English is really good, Kanusha. Keep working hard, God bless you.” I was on the seventh sky and feet of mine were not on the floor that day. I was so happy, that yes somebody today has recognized my English today.

My dear readers, here I am who have not only started speaking in English but also started to write and express with you all. But, still I’m not perfect to it, but trying to make myself better with every day passing.
