Saving The World

Lucy didn’t see the car coming till it was too late. She pushed the child and her dog away and instead took the blow head on herself. Brakes screeched as time seemed to slow down. She screamed at her muscles to move, to shake, to do something, anything. Then everything went black.

She woke at the hospital. Her parents were by her bed crying. She couldn’t move anything and she had trouble breathing.

“Mom? Dad?”

“Oh my baby girl! Don’t worry, mommy’s here. You’re gonna be okay. You’re gonna be okay. You’re gonna be…” Her mother repeated that more to herself than to confort Lucy. Her dad stood by her mom’s side shedding silent tears. Even in such a terrible situation he was a rock.

“The doctor says it’s too bad for them to fix. I told them to do anything necessary. I can certainly pay for it.” Her dad was using logic to try and fix everything, but he knew it was impossible.

“Don’t cry mom. Dad I know nothing can be done. Don’t cry. I’m gonna be just fine. Donate most of my money to help the environment. I tried so hard during my life. Please keep that up. I love you so much.” Lucy broke into a coughing fit and blacked out.

This time when she opened her eyes, she was surrounded by light. She cradled the world in her hands.
