TRUTH CAN’T BE DEFEATED.

 “One hour.

  Sixty minutes.

Three thousand and six hundred seconds.

Just one hour can change so much. It has all the power to gift a new life or just ruin everything to ashes.

I thought to myself the irony of one hour.

Being a defence lawyer and everyday walking to that court room; I have seen how one hour becomes a defining moment in someone’s life. It divulges a turning point from where there is no returning back.

A panel of sentry marched down the corridor. I had to go to the Simpton Central Jail to get signature on some papers of court order of my client from the Deputy General in charge.

As I finished my work, the DG stared at me conspicuously. He asked almost instantly-

“Will you do me a favour?

I was amusingly surprised over his anxious reaction and immediately answered-

      “Sure Sir.

I’m always servile to your orders.”

The general was a man of extreme honour and integrity. Seeing his demeanour soften with politeness, I really became curious.

The DG began with utmost courtesy-

“You are one of the best defence lawyers of the state as far as I know and that’s why I chose you. Well! You see this man came in last week. His name is Atri who is now under my jurisdiction. The charges pressed against him are that of being the prime suspect of organizing 26/11 ‘Pelling Road Blast’ which killed almost 400 people including every workman who worked there.

 Except.”

He paused. Silence split a pale colour over his face.

I outburst in anticipation.

       “Except what?

He answered in a low plaintive tone.

“Except Atri who wasn’t present there. He was also a construction worker working on the steep mountain roads of Pelling under Bill Johnson, a high profile businessman and contractor. I could well guess the conspiracy of that filthy Bill behind this.”

The DG vented out in anger.

He continued

“From the day he came in, I have seen innocent flashes of truth reflecting in his eyes and the kind wilderness is again and again gravitating my thoughts towards him.

Tomorrow there is a hearing in court for his final verdict and conviction orders.

I entreat you to fight for his justice. Will you?”

I jumped upon my seat and quickly answered-

“Sir, there is not much time left.

I need to personally enquire the details of the case with Atri.

So, Can I meet him?”

The DG hurriedly commanded his officer to accompany me to Atri’s cell and gave a gracious nod.

While I was walking, I thought how in today’s world money, position, power and possessions have corroded and conquered man’s wisdom and will power. These being the darkest colours of canvass spills shades of injustice, supremacy, vanity, lust of greed, selfishness and limelight.

I was headed through a dark alley with sombre ambience and air full of strong revulsions from prisoners around. Suddenly far from the extreme corner cell, I could hear faint notes of melancholic strains of music.

“O my love, as the clouds blow your silver cascades away,

And the cold breeze giggles to let laughter evade your crafted lips all over again.

Brown eyes gleaming amidst the mesmerizing garden of tea,

O I see you stand in enchantments of lush green, a White shining beauty.

Cosy warmth of your love and blood,

Is outpouring the cup of my heart.

I smell the fragrance of your wait for me,

Unfortunately, the darkness of fear has blinded me.

As I sit in quite quiet silence of remorse,

Cherishing the éclat memories of rejoice.

Just then the aroma lightens an intense fire of vigour, strength and hope;

Tears roll down for moments that have gone and moments still to come.

O my dearest one, stop weeping so frantically,

Because I will soon return to you either in flesh or maybe just in soul.”

It was him. Atri stopped. But unknowingly he sang a melodious rhapsody fully ornamented with emotional restraints. Deep down it strung a chord inside and I could actually feel the wait of his love. The officer unlocked the cell and went to stand outside.

I introduced myself to Atri as his defence attorney. He gave an astonished look and then nodded in agreement. It took almost an hour to know the whole story behind the curtains.

At last, Atri said-

“Sir, Humanity is our sole identity and we could not even think to harm someone.

My love always tells me that when time becomes witness to extreme injustice; Lord Krishna himself walks down to the earth as a saviour to take charge of your chariot and set yet another epic paradigm like Mahabharata to the dawn of mankind.”

Hearing this I spoke out in immense euphoria

     “Very true.

I’ll see to it that you get proper justice tomorrow.”

To distract his mind, I changed topic to cheer him up-

“Before I entered, you were singing a melodious piece of song.

So, tell me who your dearest one is?”

He complied humbly-

“She is the sole reason of my life.

Every single breath and thud in my heart is dedicated to her well being.

If fate decides justice for me tomorrow, then I had like to make a request to you.

Will you please accompany me to my house once?

She’ll be greatly elated to meet you.”

I stood up and replied-

“Actually tomorrow I have to board a train at 7’o clock evening from Pelling railway station for NJP.

I don’t think there will be much time left.”

He said-

“That’s great. My house is only 2 kilometres away from railway station.

It’ll hardly take 20 minutes.

Please....”

I agreed and bid goodbye.

“Ok. Bye. Will see you tomorrow....”

Later in the evening, I took my assistant and drove off to the site of incident. Simpton and Pelling were only an hour apart but I haven’t been there before. Meanwhile, I narrated the whole story to my PA.

The scene that happened was the NH-2A which runs across the highly dangerous mountain ranges of Pelling was being reconstructed. These roads on border areas are highly essential for national security purposes. So, the government gave contract to the specialist of modern technological gadgets, Bill Johnson. Bill hired almost 200 local workmen to finish off this work before the monsoons.

Amongst them were Atri and his father.

Often landslides and unpredictable weather worsens the condition of working on such higher altitudes. Keeping life at the edge, it is only their unbreakable determination for survival that pushes them to do this extremely dangerous work. Without providing necessary safety tools, these labourers are being exploited and oppressed mercilessly. Every year thousands of men and women become victims of incidents of falling down from the valley.

The saddest curve of the story was two months ago, Atri lost his own father in a similar incident. He could have been saved because even after he fell, he somehow managed to cling the dissected ends of rod that came out from the edges but the driver of bull dozer machine didn’t hear out to his screams and pressed away his hands. No compensation money was paid to the family. The manager even denied paying the share of money for the number of days he worked as he was claimed dead. At last, Atri left working there and never came back.

Three weeks ago, the Chief of State Council was invited to inaugurate the NH-2A. This information got leaked to the Vashista Maoist group by none other than Bill himself. Their leader plays a significant role in Bill’s propelling business of drugs so, Bill joined hands with him. All the planning was done to kill the Chief but as per the prior instruction of the Army General fortunately, he never reached there. The blast claimed so many innocent lives. Then Bill thought to play from safe hands and blame someone from where he would be left untraceable.

He shifted the blame to one of his workmen ‘Atri’ calling him a traitor and reported the police with false evidence about his association with the Maoist groups. The police took him into custody the next day. All the police investigations and trials in court till date have proven him guilty as all of them were being redirected by Bill himself.

The driver stopped the car telling-

“Sir we have reached, this is the Pelling National Highway-2A ‘Namchi’ check post and the blast happened in 1km radius from here.”

There were heavy military troops walking on night vigilance. They checked our car and we started again. He stopped the car after a bit and I told him to wait for us in car.

     “We would soon return.”

I inspected the whole area but found nothing significant. Everything was wiped out by now.

Soon we drove away. I asked the driver to drive till the end from where this road discontinues.

My PA said-

“Sir, we are going to need some solid evidence tomorrow to counterattack all their false allegations and reports.

I nodded in pensive thoughts. Suddenly the tyres screeched and I asked-

      “What happened?

The driver replied-

“I think this is the end and we have reached Pelling check post. From here on, starts the town of Pelling.”

I looked outside the window and then shouted-

“EUREKA.... Tomorrow is going to be really interesting.”

Next morning, the trial started at 12’o clock noon. Majority present were flabbergasted to see my unexpected presence including Bill. Then, the police brought Atri along with them in the court room. The prosecutor started by pressing false allegations yet again and brought out the Employee Register and said-

“Your honour this is the list of all the employees who were present on the day of incident and their signatures. It has been verified by the Forensic specialist that the signature matches with that of our suspect.”

He argued aloud for another 20 minutes and called several witnesses against Atri. He presented many false evidences but after being questioned by the judge, the prosecutor did

not have proper specification to how they have been produced. At last, I rose and with due permission from the judge connected my smart phone to the projector.

I said-

“Your honour, this video will crystal clear all the predicaments of the prosecutor as well as the audience gathered here.

It has the live CCTV footage of 18th September from Pelling NH-2A ‘Namchi’ check post. It was the day when Atri’s father died and he left his job. Atri’s motorbike is being checked by the security. His thumb impressions are being taken and a facial recognition sample is also uploaded to the system as per the general procedure. After that Atri never crossed that check post until 4th December when he was taken into police custody.

These border areas are highly sensitive and any other route chosen would have definitely been traced by BSF generals.

The other footage is of 26/11 morning 4’o clock. This camera remains hidden under different angle. Well! You all can clearly see Bill comes to meet a stranger and gives him something. This stranger is suspected to be a member of Vashista Maoist group by the BSF commander in chief.

I have recorded his statement also about this.

So, it proves that Atri is innocent. ”

At the end the judge glancing to all the facts declared Atri innocent and ordered further probe and investigation into this case by taking into custody Bill Johnson.

It was 10 past six in the evening. Our car stopped in front of Atri’s home. Both of us went down the car. I observed him carefully as he walked to the door. I knew that time was running out but suppressed the urge to check my watch. I took a deep breath and started counting “Ten, nine, eight, and seven...” A long wait was about to get over.

A perfect reunion of two lovers and the door opened. My face had an exclamation of shocking surprise. Brown eyes, beautiful smile, silver cascades flowing, a white shining beauty......

I asked in awe-

“Huh? Your love is your mother.”

He smiled and introduced me to her. He said-

“In all my life I have only known that mother is the most precious of god.”

After drinking a hot tranquil cup of refreshing Temi tea, I hurriedly drove away to be able to board my train. I saluted his spirit and waved a warm goodbye to both Atri and his sweet love.

“Bye...My mother is also impatiently waiting for me at home. I couldn’t miss this train at any cost.”

As I got on the train, I thought Mother is like sunshine in a child’s life. She covers every emptiness in life with the elixir of eternal love, care, compassion and motivation.....

True. Isn’t it?
