Kashif’s day:

“You are never home. I have to handle everything from groceries to kids PTM.”

“And I work so hard to provide you this apartment and nice dresses to wear to your PTMs.”

I replied and walked out. Driving is never easy in Mumbai. As if traffic signals and jams aren’t worse enough, over-takers make it even more horrible.

“Hey, get back here. You need to pay for this.” I shouted at the bike guy who accidentally bumped into the taillight of my car.

“I gave horn. Why did you change the lane?”

In normal scenario, we must have abused and left, but as we were about to leave:

“Sitting in expensive AC cars they don’t consider us humans" He muttered under his breath. It was already bad enough and air conditioning not working in my car didn’t make it any better.

Few minutes later, police left us with a warning.

Disheveled hair, creased shirt, dirty shoes; I knew I couldn’t meet the client. After I got the car repaired and cancelled my meeting with the client, I was almost dying with hunger.

“Sir, you cannot park here.” The watchman said

“I have to go to that restaurant. Where else do you think I should park?” I shouted at the top of my lungs

“I don’t know. But my job is to make sure, this space is clear. It’s for staff.”

“You people work like donkeys, without brains. That is why you never grow.” I left to find a suitable parking.

Rakesh’s day:

“I am trying hard, but I can’t get enough dowries for her wedding.”

“If only your father was alive..”

“Don’t start Aai, I’ll try to get some advance.” I knew she will remind me of how I couldn’t earn enough for my father’s treatment.

.

“Rakesh, you took a week leave last month and now you want advance. I am already having difficulty keeping your job.” He wasn’t in a mood of negotiation.

.

“Sir, you cannot park here.”

“I have to go to that restaurant. Where else do you think I should park?” He barked

“I don’t know. But my job is to make sure, this space is clear. It’s for staff.” I tried to be polite

“You people work like donkeys, without brains. That is why you never grow.”

“You are right. I couldn’t save my father because I didn’t have enough money for his treatment. Now, I can’t get my sister married for the same reason. I am no better than a donkey and I will never grow.”

I left the scene and walked towards the railway station nearby; to put an end to this Donkey life.
