He was smiling to himself, eyes fixed on her. He walked pleasantly past the dirty road, oblivious to all that was happening around him. The driver of a BMW was obliviously too drunk and he hit the boy. So strong was the impact, that he died after a few minutes.
He woke up minutes later. At first he was afraid to open his eyes. But he could smell the water on soil and could feel the grass on his back and hands. So, he opened his eyes. He dared to do so.
He saw fruit trees, and non-fruit trees and flowers. There were oranges and apples and guavas and roses and touch-me-nots. Everything was blooming with life. The flowers were too beautiful to look at. The sky was cloudy and a light drizzle was falling all around him; beautifying everything even further. "It is heaven!", he proclaimed.
He longed for company, feeling very lonely. So, he went out to search for his father. And as he searched, he thought:"It is as I thought heaven would be! It is all written in Plato. Everything feels so real here. The human world is but a shadow or a copy of this world here." It was his world now.
Soon, he saw a hill. He saw his father waving at him from the circular fence at the top. It was almost like a plateau. He went up to him, slipping at times. He hugged him tearfully. Except the tears never came out. He couldn't feel sad here.
"I am not your father", the man said. He stared at the man with eyes wide open. He was too surprised to say anything yet. His father's look-alike continued, with eyes fixed on him, looking intently at his expression, " It isn't heaven. It is an in-between place. You can choose peredition here, or fall to hell. But you cannot enter heaven without solving this puzzle:
If this is a dream and what you dream on earth is a dream; then who are you and who am I?" He was smiling now. And the boy thought that he knew that smile.
The boy asked, "Just tell me one thing. Is heaven more beautiful than this place?"
A spasm of doubt passed through the man's face and his smile faded, "I don't know" he said " I just got a glimpse."
It was the boy's turn to smile now, "So you are me and I am you!"
"You told me the correct answer. But you did not explain it! God told me to not open the door to heaven unless you could explain it."
"Very well. I will explain it.You are the past me. The one who died. I now am like my father, and you look like him. The past me obsessed over the next life. This is where he was wrong. However good one is, one can but get a glimpse of heaven. This is what I got sometimes during my life. My father was more practical and knew the fact that you cannot know what awaits you after death."
He smiled as he prepared to walk past the door to heaven which had magically appeared. It was too bright as he looked. He couldn't see what was behind it.
The man smiled at his back, "Go through the door! You answered well!" And he went through it.
He found himself exactly at the same place but this time there were more people. More smiling people. He thought he recognized some of them.
"My son!" his father was smiling at him."You can see heaven. You just cannot explain it."
