Internship: A Tool For Growth

My best thing is to explore places and talk with strangers and also knowing the different perceptions of people couldn’t be possible without opting law as a profession. I mean, I love travelling and meeting new people. It is also said that in order to grow yourself eternally you need to know, who you are? What is your potential?

Internship is actually not a break for me from academics but, it is a process of learning what we lacked in our theory paper. I took it always very seriously and tries to enjoy every bit of it. New people, New place, new atmosphere, a new language, new ways of dealing with legal matters, and ya how can I forget, New food,….., in total a new adventure for me. Usually, in the month of June and July, we get holiday for summer internship and in February for winter internship. In these five years of Law College I interned at various places. The first ones were in local places but the later ones were in different states. But, yeah along with mastii and hungama, lot of money also get spent during this period.

It’s always not a good day in new places. There are days where your boss will give you so much work which is literally not possible to do in that same whole day. But some days will go like wasting time as you don’t have any work to do. As being in the first and second year they will not even count you as part of the office because you are too small to learn the work. But, when you will intern in any corporate firm or litigation firm in your fourth or fifth year they will surely take your work, habits, deadlines, etc. very seriously.

In internship, if you notice yourself, you are different person altogether, your walk, your representation, inter-personal communication will change and you will always try to find some time to invest with your boss. These skills are those that we are even thought in our college or else it happens with some people that these skills come automatically.

This time coming to Chennai with new hopes, new energy, new enthusiasm that this time it will be a different internship from the rest. I’ll learn new things, new way to dealing cases, meet new people, will make new friends, etc. Doing internship under the guidance of P. Wilson sir from 1st February, 2019 to 28th February, 2019 was not an easy task for me. He gave all research work to interns and huge clerical work when required. In the first half, see the proceedings, learn the advocating skills and write a brief note that sir is arguing in the Court. Well, in the second half researching the judgments on the proposition given by sir. Also, sir had two offices, one near Madras High Court where we do our first half and after completion of court work going to the next office which is near sir’s house. But, it was not that hectic for me to intern under him. I spent my internship, half time chilling, gossiping, and knowing their perception to life and half time seriously finding citations from Manupatra and SCC Online.

Furthermore, Interning here was never a boring thing because you have 10-12 friends in the office who are advocates also working under sir. Some people were of my age group while others were a bit experienced and elder than me. But, talking with them and asking for help was never a shy thing for me. But according to them, I’m a still a kid who is in the first or second year of law. Also, I remember that Wilson sir asked me that which year you are in? Second or Third year? I confidently said fourth-year sir. I became friends with everyone within two-three days. As we know the bond of friendship starts with fun and teasing other. So, they didn’t leave any chance to tease me and pulling my leg. They tried to make fun of my height, my shoe length, hindi language, and many others. Also, I’m famous in office as “Modi” supporter. Well, sometimes it was fine listening to all these and laughing with them. But, sometimes it also hurts me.

First person to know from office was Suhasini Akka. She is sweet, good with managing things and one of the senior members of the office.

My first friend in the office was Preethi akka. She is the person whom I get to know first. She is cute, kindhearted, independent woman and has charming personality. I can’t forget 3rd feb, 2019, we were travelling from Nungambakkam to Tambaram with expired ticket. That Sunday we were so much frustrated and I was just listening to her and making her clam. And I am a little upset with you as you didn’t take me for Mahabalipuram trip and Suhasini Akka’s house. But, I have no complaints regarding this. You are still my “cute” akka.

Next one is Vishnu Anna who has helped me to get High Court pass. He is known to make the environment funny and fill it with positive vibes. He is adventurous, assertive, and philosophical by nature, have good sense of humor, can be a good teacher. He did not leave any chance to tease me.

Arivu Sir has given me a title after my name i.e. Kanusha Natwarlal. He and Dinesh Anna has never left any chance to debate me on the topic on PM Modi. He is also one of the experienced person in the firm.

Agilan Anna is one of the person who has talked to me very less. I think most of the time it was me who always poked him to talk to me, otherwise he has always one friend i.e. his Mobile. According to me, he has one motto in life that, “No friends, No foes. Do your Work and Go Home.”

Abhinu Akka is sweet, generous, faithful, loyal friend, passionate and cheerful person. She gets easily hurt by people. She is the person in the office with whom I have shared maximum time and talks. Thank you for always making me happy after the tiring schedule of office. Also, Thank you akka for taking me to High Court Museum.

Joseph Anna is a very ambitious person, sensitive, emotional, secretive, shy and good with heart. Going with you and abhinu akka to JVL office was always fun. I have many memories with you and abhinu akka to cherish forever.

Sneha Akka is loving girl, emotional, kind, sociable, and hypersensitive to criticism. She is tenacious, strong-willed and works hard to attain her goals. You are the only girl with whom I have done many bullshit talking. Thanks for taking me to that Pani Puri Bhaiya’s Shop so that I release my stress by talking to him in Hindi. Also, Thanks for the chicken biryani treat akka.

Dinesh Anna is an extraordinary human, funny, thoughtful and caring, can do anything for friends and good at managing things. He has scolded me many times for coming late to office, for gossiping with someone, for roaming inside the court hall, for not picking the call, for singing songs during work and many more. It’s true that I cried that day because of him as even after trying my level best, I was still making mistakes. And that day I got really hurt by his scolding. But, this doesn’t mean that he is bad to me. I have always taken his scolding in a positive way and promised myself not to make that mistake again. So, thank you so much for everything. Also, he is very good at imitating me.

Dhayanadh Sir- I have always tried to learn something by his scolding, advise, and appreciations. I cannot write much about him as I have always seen him as my teacher, senior and one of the experienced person in office. He has never left any chance to scold and tease me. Thanks for the Gujarati food on my birthday.

Vijilakshmi Akka is a girl known in office as a small packet with big surprises. She is simple, independent, happy girl, hard worker, but also good in becoming rude at times. Thank you for sharing your Chicken Biryani with me that day.

Vinupriya Akka is beautiful, funny, sweet, innocent, hard-working, intelligent, independent girl, good at making faces and also a good listener. She is very real and shows to people what she is. She has always been very sweet and caring to me. Initially, we never talked much but in the last days of my internship we got the time to talk and know each other. I remember the days when I was new in the office and I didn’t know the route to go back to my room. She was so much tensed at that time that I don’t know the language and also I don’t have an android phone. So, she went with me to the Chennai Beach railway station to show me the route.

I also tried to become friendly with Wilson sir which is, another joke famous in Office. When I first met sir he looked at me a little rude and arrogant. But when I went to inform him on my second last day of office that “Tomorrow is my last day, Sir”. He smiled and said, “Oh, that nice, you really did well. We will prepare your certificate and everything.” Then, I thought that he is not that bad. Also when I received my certificate and stipend, he was sweet to me and ended up appreciating my work.

And then comes my birthday on 19th Feb, 2019. I know there is nothing special about my birthday but having your birthday in a place which is a new place is different. You get little attention, people will try to make you happy and will give you gifts. But, this day was as usual like any other day of my internship. Thanks to Dinesh Anna, Dhaya sir and Preethi Akka, they took me to Gujarati Restaurant where I had Chapattis after 18 days. I would also like to thank Abinu Akka for making me happy by giving me flowers and gifts.

Apart from my friends in the office I made 4-5 friends in court, some were advocates while some were CISF’s, working temporarily in High Court Madras. And most the CISF know hindi, so it was easy for me to make them friends.

I think if I talk about any shortcomings which I faced was the language problem. I also get to know that I’m the only intern which got less administrative work otherwise sir always make the intern run from office to court and court to office. But I tried my level best to perform well and learn wherever I got the opportunity. Lastly, I want to thank everyone for making my internship a great success.
