It was a pleasant evening with some clouds in the sky, the cool breeze had started flowing after a hot day which was disappearing little by little with the sun moving towards the extreme west and ready to set. A 5 year old boy was playing alone and trying to make clay figures when he heard one of his friends saying, “hey, the groom is almost ready. Let’s go and watch.” Both ran towards a home located at the western end of the village. There was a large gathering around the groom, so he tried to make some space for himself and peeped in through the legs of the people. He was quite amazed to see the groom sitting in the middle of the courtyard and surrounded by people. At the door, the he saw an elephant, a horse and a number of trolleys all decorated beautifully for baraat. The boy got fascinated by all this and rushed to his home and asked his mother to give him some good clothes to wear and to let him go along with the bridegroom but she did not agree and even scolded him. However the devil had occupied his mind and he was determined to go, so he sneaked away from his home without letting anyone know and adjusted himself in an overcrowded trolley attached to a tractor. As the tractor moved ahead, the boy thought many times to get down anticipating the punishment he might have to face and this urge was stronger when the tractor passed by his maternal grandmother’s village but it has become darker by that time and he shivered by the thought of crossing alone the mini jungle that falls between the village and the road.

Finally he reached bride’s place at around 10 o’clock in the night. After light snacks and dinner, the stage was set for a drama on the story of a famous lady robber known as Phulan Devi so the night came alive with drama and intercepting dance performances. The night was fully entertaining but the morning was shocking. His worried father could not sleep the whole night and reached the site very early morning with his uncle when the breakfast was being served. Both took him along with them to the nearby town where his uncle owned a hotel. In next few hours his father left for home leaving him with his uncle who got him enrolled in a school the very next day. Here the boy found himself in a totally different world. The school was quite different from the village school; students did not sit on the mat under a neem or peepal tree but in beautifully built class rooms on neat and clean benches. The teachers did not indulge in gossip but engaged with the students; campus was full of flowers and beautiful plants. Although this young boy had just passed class 2 and was supposed to study in class three but here he was disqualified for class three and was admitted to class first only.

In this way, the mischievous act of the boy proved to be a fortunate one and turned out to be a life changing event as it opened new horizons for him and put him on the right path of educational journey, otherwise like his other class mates of the village he would have remained in the village only to drop out later and become a small self employed person with no knowledge of the world. The boy studied in this school for three years making a lot of friends, gifting the flowers of the hotel garden to his co-traveler students on the Tanga that would ferry him to & fro and his classmates and obviously to his first crush that resulted in a short novel later on. His good grades in the exams and interest in education drove his uncle to think about him more seriously and for a better school and finally after consultation with his father he enrolled him in a good school in Lucknow where he spent more than a decade and learnt many important lessons of his life.
