Shamita was in the final year of her graduation. Yamini had recently joined the same college as her sister. She was excited about her new college life. They hailed from a simple middle-class family in Mumbai. Their father Rajendra Saini worked for the Income Tax department while their mother Anupama was a housewife. Shamita and Yamini had a month's vacation before their college reopened for the new academic session.

"Should I wear this pink dress or that green one?" asked Shamita for the hundredth time. Her younger sister Yamini lost her patience. She replied with a smirk, " I have a better idea. Why don't you go naked? There won't be any confusion. For God's sake, can't you make your own decision?" Shamita stuck out her tongue at her. She finally selected a pink churidar with blue salwar and dupatta.

They were going out shopping with their friends for their upcoming trip to Matheran. Their friends were already waiting for them outside the shopping mall. They shopped for nearly an hour and had snacks at a restaurant.

They cracked jokes and teased each other while munching on pizzas and burgers. " Hey, I can't eat this anymore," said Shamita's friend Varsha, " Would anyone like to finish my share of pizza?" " No way, " replied Shamita, " I am on a diet." Her sister teased her by saying, "The poor soul's diet consists of two coffees in the morning followed by four parathas with butter floating over them. She usually has dal rice with paneer butter masala and Chapatis. She skips evening tiffin and has early dinner. I would not mention the evening menu. She will roast me with her eyes."

The girls including Shamita laughed uproariously. She was a good sport and adored her sister. They returned home in a jovial mood. " That was fun, Wasn't it?" asked Yamini, "We should go out together more often." Their father heard them and said, " You have already spent more than we could afford.

Don't go out too much for shopping or else I would be bankrupt."

"Don't be a spoilsport, Papa, " said Shalini, " We need to dress decently for our college.

Her father laughed and said, " It's impossible to argue with a woman over shopping and win the debate."

They left for Matheran with their friends after a week. They had a great time enjoying the scenic beauty of the hill station. Time flew away quickly. Their dream holidays came to an end after ten days.

They spent the rest of their holidays by helping their mother in the kitchen and buying groceries and vegetables. Their father seemed to be too preoccupied to spend some time with his family. Shamita and Yamini noticed that he appeared to be frustrated over something. They did not dare to approach him.

Days passed away quickly. There was hardly a week left for the college to reopen.

One day Rajendra came home quite early looking extremely happy. His family was glad to see him in a pleasant mood. He said, " Anupama and my sweet little daughters, get ready quickly. We are going out for dinner."

They were surprised when Rajendra took them to an expensive restaurant. He asked them to order anything they liked. Anupama was a bit hesitant, but he prodded her to try something new. They laughed and chatted forgetting the erstwhile tensed atmosphere in thief house.

Rajendra dropped the girls to their college and proceeded towards his office. Yamini felt a little nervous as it was her first day. She asked Shamita, "I am scared, Shamita. Will the seniors rag me? How am I going to face them?" Her sister replied, "Relax! No one is going to rag you. Just be yourself and make friends like you did when you were in school. The seniors are not monsters. I will see you during lunch."

Yamini followed Shamita's advice and made many new friends on the first day itself. Both the sisters hired an auto rickshaw and came home. Their mother Anupama was preparing their favorite snacks, onion pakoras. She smiled at them and said, " Hi, Girls. How was your day in college?"

Both replied in unison, "Fine." Their father had a surprise for them. He had bought a new two-wheeler for Shamita. She was very thrilled and thanked her father for his wonderful gift. He gave Yamini a brand new smartphone. Anupama watched everything in absolute silence. He had a present for his wife as well. He gave her a diamond necklace. Though she accepted it with a smile, her conscience did not permit her to wear it. Her sixth sense told her that there was something wrong with all these gifts. "How could a man earning a moderate income buy all these expensive gifts?" she thought, "I hope he has not resorted to any illegal business to supplement his income."

She kept her thoughts to herself as she got busy in the kitchen. The girls were having a great time at their college.

Yamini's best friend Devika invited her to her birthday party after a week. She wore her best dress and went to Devika's house at 6 PM to attend her birthday party on Tuesday. She was shocked to find young girls and boys dancing with each other in an inebriated state. Devika was wearing a black miniskirt with a white tank top and a black jacket. She was wearing a blue colored wig and false eyelashes with overdosage of makeup. She saw Yamini standing at the entrance. She yanked her in and started dancing like a crazy woman. Yamini said, "Please let me go Devika. I am not comfortable with this kind of weird party. You have cheated me by inviting to a rave party instead of a birthday party."

Devika laughed at her and called her brother Viaan. He and his friends surrounded Yamini. She felt so vulnerable like a deer facing a predator. Viaan gripped her arms and held it tightly. Devika injected cocaine forcefully into her veins. It had its immediate effect. Yamini shed all her inhibition and joined them. She lost her self control and her virginity. Viaan seduced her, and she yielded to his charms.

She did not go home that night. Her parents and sister were worried when she did not return home. Shamita called Devika who told her that Yamini had stayed back because she was too tired. She promised to drop Yamini in the morning.

They heaved a sigh of relief when Yamini back in the morning. She was not her usual self. She looked like a zombie. Shamita and her parents were shocked by her appearance. She did not attend college on that day.

There was a considerable change in her behavior. She often hanged around at Devika's house and became a drug addict. She craved for sex and got romantically involved with Viaan. She resorted to stealing money from her father's wallet and mother's purse.

Their world came crashing down when Shamita caught her taking drugs. She confronted her, but Yamini refused to open her mouth. Shamita told her parents about Yamini's drug problem. They stopped her going to college and sent her to a rehabilitation center. Yamini became violent and started thrashing the other inmates of the center.

She tried to run away from the center. The Warden caught her trying to escape by jumping over the wall. She alerted the authorities who captured her and locked her in a solitary room. They also called Rajender and asked him to take her back to his house.

Yamini felt the pain, and humiliation tormenting her. She felt guilty for her misconduct and drug addiction. She could not face her family after succumbing to drugs and sexual pleasure. She did not want to hide anything from her family. She wrote a long letter addressed to her family. She described how Devika tricked her into drug addiction and blamed her brother for wilfully taking advantage of her. He had raped her under the influence of drugs to make it look like consensual sex. She had become a slave of cocaine. She hated herself for losing her morals. She already lost her interest in life.

She concluded her letter with an apology to her family for betraying their trust and bringing shame and disgrace to them. She asked Shamita to have Devika and Viaan arrested for the abetement to her suicide.

After an hour, the warden came to her room with a tray of food. She screamed aloud after seeing Yamini's lifeless body hanging from the ceiling. Rajendra and his family broke down upon seeing her dead body. Anupama and Shamita hugged each other and wept inconsolably. Rajendra burst into tears. Shamita read her suicide note and got enraged. After completing all the legal formalities, Rajendra cremated Yamini.

Shamita filed the police complaint against Devika and Viaan. The police recovered a huge haul of cocaine and heroin from their bungalow.

During the police interrogation, Viaan confessed to his crimes. He said, "I admit that I forced Yamini to take drugs and sleep with me. I decided to supply drugs after seeing my friend Jackie doing a roaring business. I convinced my sister Devika to join me because

our father refused to give us any pocket money. Jackie introduced me to his supplier. Jackie joined us, and we started making a huge profit."

The inspector asked him, "Can you tell us about your supplier? If I could help it, I would have broken your bones and that of your sister's as well. What kind of beasts are you to prey upon so many innocent lives?"

Viaan revealed the name of the supplier. There was absolute silence for a while.

Shamita and her grieving parents had organised a prayer meeting for paying tribute to the departed soul. The police arrived with a pair of handcuffs. Inspector Vishwas said, "I am sorry to interrupt, Mr. Rajendra. You are under arrest for drug peddling. You are solely responsible for your daughter's death. The accused Viaan has named you as his supplier. He did not know that Yamini was your daughter. He ruined your daughter just as you destroyed the lives of so many innocent children. What do you have to say in your defense?"

Rajendra said, "Please arrest me, Inspector. I am ashamed of myself. I never thought that I would lose my daughter in this way. I wanted to give all sorts of comfort to my wife and children. My moderate income did not allow me to do so. I resorted to gambling and incurred heavy losses. I mulled over my next move. I thought drug peddling was a quicker way of earning money. My partner in crime Shambhu helped me to set up this business. I did repay all my debts. I ended up as a loser. I lost my most precious possession, my daughter." His wife and daughter looked at him in disgust. Anupama said, " Please take this man away before I kill him with my own hands. He is a murderer. I hate him, and I never want to see his face as long as I am alive. He killed my daughter." Shamita thrust the keys of her two-wheeler and Yamini's mobile in his hand. She said, " We don't want anything to do with your sinful earning. Please do us a favor. Do not associate your name with us. We will never forgive you for the rest of our lives."

The police led Rajendra away. Their friends and relatives went away leaving the mother and daughter alone.

Shamita began her active campaign against the drugs abuse. She conducted road shows and distributed pamphlets in schools and colleges to create an anti-drug awareness. Her mother supported her in her crusade against drugs. She was proud of her daughter, Shamita.
