The Awakening
The Awakening
She was proud of him,
And yet didn’t want him to leave.
There, she saw him through the window
But couldn’t bear to see him go.
The long wait, months of being alone,
Would all be worth it this time.
No, this time would be different,
For waiting for him home wouldn’t be one but two.
His mind was clear, his heart pure,
He had to be brave.
There was no looking back now
Thousands depended on him
He had a nation to serve.
Has he written back? Should I tell him?
How is he? Is he fine?
These thoughts washed her mind.
Days turned into weeks
Weeks into months and the wait continued
Until finally that day came
Where two would become three.
Shots were heard as the enemy attacked.
He didn’t think twice before firing back.
He could have just fled and run
Or have just given up,
But on his one life depended many,
Including his wife.
Brave and daring he marched on.
All was well until there was the silence before the storm.
'BOOM', it exploded
He’d stepped on a landmine
His eyes had almost shut and there went the last cry of his lifetime.
She made her first cry.
Fresh air filled her lungs
And she finally opened her eyes.
This bundle of joy lay in her arms,
And oh, her smile!
The news had not reached
Time was yet to unfold.
Other than the child,
Two had become one.
