Ted And Jane
Ted And Jane
I walked almost a mile on the unkempt village path
With Ted who had a lump in his throat and pain in his heart
He said "My mind is numb with pain, you see"
And silently we trudged towards the large cemetery
" 'Tis quite cold, isn't it dear Robin?
It's late June and I am almost shivering."
Then reflecting on the term 'late June '
said", Oh! it's ''late Jane who has withered so soon''
We soon reached the closed cemetery gates
Ted said"It's bolted and locked to keep it safe"
I laughed and proposed"let's come tomorrow in the morn again"
"Oh No dear Robin", said Ted" tomorrow is ne'er gonna be the same."
So I followed Ted as he scrutinized the cemetery walls
"See dear Robin, here it's quite low and we can get in after all"
So Ted climbed over and I followed his will
But I tell you, folks! There was ne'er a night so still
NowTed stood still looking towards our west
Then closing his eyes ,walked; counting his steps
In a low voice, he then said"look yonder.....that Neem tree
It's the last grave to the left."
And sure enough, freshly dug soil formed a six feet long mound
Next, I heard" Oh dear Jane, your death gives my heart this awful wound"
Then bending his head low, Ted wiped a tear or two
And sobbed"Oh dear Jane, see your Ted is here for you"
Then a loud ringing laughter echoed in the air
And I tell you, folks! Almost a hundred birds fluttered wildly...scared
And then on the Neem tree, we saw Ted's 'Dear Jane' hanging upside down
Her neat white stockings up in the air and her face peeping through the hems of her gown
"Run Ted", I shouted "run friend for your life"
And we ran like Hell with extremely long strides
A few seconds later we were o'er the walls on the other side
And Ted's' Dear Jane'? Yes she came to see us off
"Come again Dear Ted" she winked and scoffed.
