The Marriage Celebration

The Marriage Celebration

A huge tent was being erected, perhaps there was going to be a grand marriage celebration. Golu stood outside at a slight distance from the tent lest he be taken for a thief. He marvelled at the kind of money rich could afford on such celebrations. Thinking of the food to be served there brought hunger cravings to his stomach. He had not eaten much since morning. It was already afternoon. Perhaps his mother would bring something to eat in the evening when she returned from the work.

Golu was ten years old, but he might as well have wisdom about the world of a grown-up person. He decided that there was no point in standing here and thinking about the food. He turned for going somewhere else. Just then he saw a harried person, who looked like a person in-charge, come out of the tent. He looked at Golu and walked towards him.

Golu was scared and tried to run away from the place, but the man caught hold of his arm.

The man asked him, “Can you do some work here to help us? We have shortage of manpower. We shall give you the leftovers after the function is over.”

Golu readily agreed. He had nothing to do in the afternoon and the lure of food was also there.

It was late into the night when the function was over. Golu’s work was finished, but he was very tired. He did not know when did he fall asleep from the exhaustion.

In the morning he got up in his own hut. His mother had still not left for work. The first thing that came to his mind was that he had missed the sumptuous food yesterday night by falling asleep. Someone must have dropped him home after he fell asleep.

His mother called, “Golu, get ready. I have food for you.”

After some time, Golu sat on the mat for food. He was surprised that the food being served in the wedding was on the plate. He looked at his mother questioningly.

His mother replied, “The person who dropped you here also delivered this food. It might last us for two days. You must have done a good job.”

Golu gave a wide smile. It was not only for good food but also for the appreciation.
