Bikash Das sipped the tea and looked at his grandson Ashok, who is just 14 years old and sitting besides him. Bikash is now 75 years old and a retired I R S officer. He is staying with his wife Namita in his village after retirement. This is the village where he had burned. His only son Srikant is a businessman and stays with his family in the city, which is just 60km away from the village. During the school vacation of school Srikant had come to the village along with his family. Srikant too have only one son Ashok. Since they came to the village, everyday Ashok used to sit with his grandfather and listens to inspirational stories. Today Ashok asked Bikash to tell something related to his past. That made Bikash to give a look at his grandson and he gave a smile and started.

Bikash just relaxed on the sofa and said,’’ok, now listen. Here in this village, I had burned to a very poor family. My father, your great grandfather was a farmer. This house was not like this, it was a small house, where I was staying with my parents and two brothers. I was the eldest among all. I had my schooling here. My school is 5km from our village. During my time the road was not good and I used to go to school by walking. I had completed my H S C examination from this school. I remembered during the 11th class I was not having books to read as my father was unable to afford for that. I used to go to my friends place and sit with them to complete my study and return home around 9 pm. Sometimes I used to stay in their house. My dream was to take admission in the best college of the city and that can be only possible with a good result. While in my schooling I used to participate in debate competition and essay competition and won the medals. Even I won gold and silver medals. I was doing very hard work to get the best result in examination. I remembered before the examination my father was unable to arrange money for the examination fee and I had sold my silver medal for that. My two brothers were doing their schooling and were not focused in studies.

I passed the H S C examination in 1st division with very good marks and got my admission in my dream college. I too got qualified to get scholarship every month due to my result of H S C examination. I got a seat in hostel to stay. I was very happy, but my parents were not. They were worried about the expenses for my study and the hardship of maintenance of family. I explained them that my expenses of study will be arranged through my scholarship and they shouldn’t be worried for that. Then they were relaxed. I completed my intermediate examination in 1st division, but couldn’t qualify for scholarship. During my college period I had impressed my principal and professors with my activities in debate and essay competitions. I won many prizes. When I talked about my problems to my principal and my financial problems to continue further study, he supported me. I confessed him that my gal was to be an I A S officer. He could see the determination and sincerity in my goal and made my fees free under poor student’s scholarship scheme. I cried that day before him saying that if he wouldn’t have helped me then I would have gone to the village to help my father and two brothers in farming. He consoled me and advised me focus on my dream and goal. I was concentrating on my graduation and also continuing with my debate competition and winning the prizes. Even I won chancellor’s cup thrice in debate competition, which is the best and toughest competition of the state. This had further brought me closer to my principal and professors. I gave my final examination and was awarded with the best graduate award due to my result and other activities. This had qualified me for a good scholarship. I took admission in post-graduation course in the same college. Even I was sending some money to my father from my scholarship. During this period my real testing period started. I knew my problems and my goal. I started preparations for my I A S and P G examination together. As I was not in a position to go for any coaching, I prepared myself accordingly. I started spending time in the college library and going through the books and journals every day. I gave my P G examination and got the 1st position. By that time, I had almost prepared myself for the I A S examination. I gave the examination and instead of I A S post I got qualified for I R S . I joined the service and still tried for I A S , but didn’t got qualified. Then I got married and your father burned to us. This house was built during my service period. I financed my two brothers and they are doing their business and living happily with their family in this village. During my service period I took my parents from here to stay with me happily and till the end of their life I gave them all, what they had missed in their life.’’

Then Ashok clapped and said,’’ I am proud of you Dadu.’’ Bikash told him,’’ Son remember one thing, always be focused on your goal. Give your all the best. Never got disheartened when face the problem. T Goal of your life will give you always options to solve the problems. You can solve your problems if you are serious and determined. No matter what is your background, but if you had fixed your goal and working hard on it, then you can achieve it. I advised your father, but he was not focused and my parents love and affections derailed him from his concentration. He couldn’t fix his goal properly and choose to do business. So now you set your goal and start preparing yourself to achieve that. You will be a winner.’’

By that time Namita came and said,’’ Now it’s time both of you get ready to go to the temple for the puja. Today is the annual day of the temple. This is also your (Bikash’s) goal to make this day’s celebration a success.’’ Bikash smiled and said to Ashok,’’ yes this is one of my Goals as your grandmother told. Now get ready dear. The life is nothing without The Goal.’’
