When Guru walked into the school for the first time, he had not had big hopes. For a kid of his means, entering a high school was in itself a big thing. So when his teacher asked him what he wants to be, he had no clue. He started thinking. He carefully was listening to his friends for ideas.

Ravi said, "I want to be a police officer when I grow up."

"Good start, Ravi. Who inspired you?" asked the teacher

"My father, sir. He was a police officer too."

"So your father taught all about catching criminals?"

"No, sir. My father told me how to find the cases which pay bribes."

The teacher wanted to teach Ravi a lesson with his stick. But his father being a police officer he skipped the idea. Next, he decided to ask the girls.

Sunitha said, "I want to study hard and complete IAS."

"Wow, that is great. What will you do after becoming an IAS."

"I will marry an IAS and relax at home."

"What? Why doing IAS for that?"

"My mom is an IPS. Because of that, she married an IPS officer. To marry an IAS, I need to be an IAS."

"Being an IAS, you can do a good job too."

"Why should I struggle. I can relax at home instead."

"I will be an MLA", said Rahul.

Giving up on the class teacher just signalled a why with his hand.

"My father is sarpanch of the panchayat. He tells me MLA is making more money."

Ranga said, "He wants to be a government hospital doctor."

This time teacher just moved his eyes up to ask why.

"Then you can take government salary and work privately to make more money."

Guru was clueless when the teacher asked him what he wanted to be. His first thought was he wanted to be a "He-Man". A "He-man" was not practical. So, he thought he wanted to be Richie-Rich. But listening to all his friends, Guru realized what the teacher was asking. He started thinking practically. It was Guru's turn, and the teacher turned to Guru nonchalantly.

"I will commit suicide."

The teacher turned his full attention to Guru and asked in a sad and surprised tone, "Why?"

"Well, I heard all my friends today, going by that and what has been the practice for generations. See, my great grandfather was a farmer with 20 acres of land. He lost 10 acres due to some minister's greed. Out of shame, he committed suicide. My grandfather lost 5 acres due to losses. As was the family tradition, he too committed suicide. My father got only 5 acres. Due to a road extension, my father lost all of it and committed suicide. As his son, I will have nothing but work as farm-labour. The end will come to me like my family, one day. I will have nothing but suicide left to wait for in the future."

The school bell rang, and everyone left the class. The teacher, with his eyes tearing, stopped Guru and took him under his guidance.

P.S: Guru went onto become a horticulture officer and did not have to commit suicide. He had believed only one thing all his life "farmer first".
