Solanga Circus

Solanga Circus

The brittle layer of copper silk shed off her skin in front of the young new crowd at Solanga Circus.

"Wow what a beauty!" they said, mesmerized at the dip of cloth and croon.

"She's like no other," bragged the circus master. "Fresh from the streets of Hamein and Brass, that's what she is."

A wave of disapproval went through the crowd.

"Why is she next to that plain-looking guy."

"What a bland romance!"

The crowd jeered and scoffed at the character. Said character was within range of the affronted crowd. If this affected him, he didn't show it. His dialogues were spoken in an absent glamor work and modestly priced pieces.

The cloth dipped further down her shoulder as he glanced his hands over her arms as if aching to touch her but holding himself back from it.

"Brouillons," he spoke with great interest. "Won't you accompany me to Island Bay?"

"I cannot," the girl sighed. "My father would not let me."

The man stepped forward and held her hands. "Then let's run away. Run away with me. Let me run away with you."

The girl's eyes lit up. "Would you run away with me? Oh! Would you really?"

The guy nodded.

And with a heartfelt embrace, they swirled and whooshed on the stage, their long drapes fluttering behind them. The fire-man threw fire and the dart-man threw darts, but they evaded them, all while climbing a long ladder.

The crowd hooted and cheered for them, and the whole show went on after its little skit, to show the jumping animals, the jolly joker, and the blushing maiden.

The circus was an overwhelming success.

The paper the next day had other views about it though. 'The skit underplays the obstacles life throws at us,' it said, 'and has a near saccharine arm coat that misguides the blind to an easy roseful life. It lacks relatability. Moreover, the animals in the circus were all from Whonda valley, with not a scent of zebra; but it is of course expected for one to exclude the Very Rare Zebra, as no one ever sees it or cares to look for it. I was particularly put off by the lack of character shown by the blushing maiden and absolutely no emotion from the male lead of the skit. Otherwise, the circus was well received, though whether it deserved to be so or not is a matter yet to be looked into.'

What balderdash!
