It’s been thirty six hours since I slept. I was working on a double shift to fulfil my girlfriend BASIC requirements.

It was mid-2001 and I was returning home after finishing my shift of good 36 hours. The distance between my workstation and home is approximately six kilometres. I live in New Delhi. By giving you the timeline and place, I think you can predict the reason for running a good amount of fear running inside my veins , “Monkey Man also known as Kaala Bandar incidents in our city”.

Those who are still in confusion, Let me give you the context here ,a creature of about four feet(120 centimetres tall) fully covered in thick black hairs, glowing red eyes, metal claws and helmet and three buttons on the chest was attacking people at that time and hurting them badly.

So, I was coming from my office at around 11PM and there was no transport service available in that area. I was moving very quickly out of fear. I have to cross three alleys where nobody was outside at that point of time. Moving, running, trembling, I reached home, quickly ate food and instructed everybody that I was going to the barsaati(a habitable room at the roof without a kitchen or a bathroom) and requested them to not disturb me for the next ten hours. My aunt told me that my three year old cousin is also sleeping in that room so Don’t worry nobody will disturb you.

I climbed the stairs, went to the room, drank water from the Matka(an earthen pot) and fell asleep on the mat on the floor itself in the next three minutes. After ten or fifteen minutes I heard a very loud sound and felt wet under me. I opened my eyes and saw the pieces of earthen pot scattered on the floor . I woke up with a frown and started picking up the pieces of pot. While doing this, I saw a shadow behind the door which was gradually coming near to me. My tired brain out of irritation and frustration instructed my body to pick up the thick stick to defend my cousin. I switch on the lights and saw that it was a monkey who was also looking shocked and afraid from his face

I used different facial and hand expressions to scare off the monkey but that only provoked the monkey and it scratched me on my hand and face , and bit me on my left foot.

Out of anger and to defend my cousin I picked up the stick to beat the monkey.

It grabbed the stick and broke it into three pieces. I had only one thing in mind, i.e. to save my cousin, So whatever I saw in the room, started throwing at him. This blind firing made it panicked and it ran away. I was so angry at that time that I followed the monkey , kept throwing things at it and A glass full of water perfectly hit its foot and it ran away to another roof limping.

I came back to my room, kissed my cousin’s forehead and went down to get the wiper to cover the water off the floor. My uncle saw the scratches on my hand and face and asked me what happened. I told him about the incident ,he advised me to get the injection for the precaution of rabies and said it should be done as soon as possible.

Luckily, a doctor lived in our neighbourhood and he was so kind that he had told all the residents of our colony that they could come at any time to his house for treatment. So, I went to his house. But to my surprise there were almost ten people waiting outside his house for treatment. I asked them what happened .

They all had the same story that one limping monkey came and attacked them in their room while they were resting or sleeping or eating in their room. Everyone there was having the same curiosity that what made that monkey violent on that level?

For the sake of my well-being, I decided to stay silent and quietly went and stood at the back of the line.
