The first wave of Covid-19 had reached its lowest point. The vaccine was administered to the vast majority of our countrymen. The MNCs and domestic behemoths waited for the eased norms to conduct business. They respected the government's choice to hold the layoffs in the name of realignment and restructuring.

Healthcare and pharmaceutical firms benefited from a windfall. They, too, wanted to sail on the layoff boat. Healthcare and pharmaceutical companies led the way in terms of employee reductions. However, they adhere to routines and norms. With the MHA's new robust strategy, a common census prevailed for a decreased workforce of up to 10%. As a result, 5% will be handed severance packages, while the remaining 5% will be relocated to a faraway area. The main goal was to obtain mass resignations.

Sukanta was a midlevel healthcare professional from the North East. Crossed his prime, now 40, and had decent growth, but saw his limitations in competing with Metro colleagues. His strength was remaining close to the budget. His ambitions were low; he was content to be the lucky person from an obscure village.

He also knew that the company was anticipating a large number of pink slips from employees. However, he avoided discussing it with his elderly parents and wife. He intuitively reasoned that he would cross the bridge when it came. Why jeopardize the joyful present? But, in the end, he psychologically prepared for anything.

Yes, the news came within a month. His name was not on the 5% severance list. Lord was gracious, and he was given a transfer letter to work out of Jammu. He must confirm back to HR within 48 hours, or his position will be terminated. He took his family to a nice restaurant for dinner that evening. He discussed and finalized his decision to relocate to Jammu.

Sukanto accepted Jammu base with a prayer the next morning, followed by an auto-generated email from HR, thanking him for his acceptance.

Sukanto received air tickets with three days t

o stay at company facilities in Jammu within a week. After three days, he would be on his own in a different place. He said goodbye to his family and hugged his 10-year-old kid. With little items and a tear in his eye, his bus arrived at Guwahati Airport. Jammu welcomed our NE native in less than three hours. He took a taxi from the airport to the company's lodging. The next day, he went to work and became friends with his admin guy. This Admin person gave him the typical introduction round in his new office, completed some paperwork, and Sukanto took the time to study the market. He also guided him to his next hunt for the Guest house and dropped him at the location. Sukanto was pleased to find a neat and small room with 3 beds and AC. Veg dinner was included at 11K per month. Sukanto immediately ranked his wife and confirmed that his stay arrangement is done.

Before delivering the advance, he confirmed that the room and supper are for 11K. The heavens split when the house owner remarked, "Dear Sukanto, 11K is only for one bed and dinner." If you require this room, it will cost you 30K. He thanked the owner profusely for the clarification and asked for a day to respond.

Sukanto thought till late at night, calculated his expenses, and, true to his word, knocked on the Owner's door early in the morning, before entering the office. The proprietor welcomed him inside with a grin and offered him a cup of Kashmiri tea.

The room was his at 25K, plus dinner.

Another concern is the daily commute from the Guest house to the office. The up-and-down excursion would cost him 600 with Local Auto. If this continues, he will be out of money at the end of the month. He then transferred his bike to Jammu to save money.

Sukanto got himself settled as Lord is caring. Last heard, he received out-of-turn promotions for having the greatest earnings in the Jammu circle. The cherry on top came during Durga Pooja. The management team recommended a grade change and a transfer to his hometown.
