The last few nights I have not been able to sleep. Every time I doze off, I would get the same dream. I saw an abandoned cottage. My conscience kept on telling me to step in. In front of me was a man being beaten up. He spoke German. I saw his attire and I immediately knew that he was a sergeant. But how did he get here? That was a question I could not think about. Suddenly, the man torturing the sergeant noticed something was wrong and ordered his men to search the room. I had nowhere to run. I was boxed like a fish! I had my hands behind my back and was tied to a chair next to the sergeant. They realized that I knew German and gave me a choice either I gave translated whatever the sergeant was to say, or I would be put out of my miseries. I could do good or do bad.

That was the time I would roll out of bed wide awake. Now I had enough of it. I was getting frustrated that I did not know what happened next. I also knew that this was not normal as lightning never strikes in the same place twice. I finally went to my laptop and searched for “abandoned house”. And lo and behold, I found just what I was looking for. That night, I armed myself with my Mauser C96 which my uncle had given me during the world war and a pen-knife. Shockingly, the same events had followed, just like how my dream was. I decided to learn a little about the sergeant. I could not believe that I was getting the information I wanted right under the assailants’ noses. He told me that his name was Klaus. I learnt that he was a sergeant in the German army. He was on his way to meet the staff sergeant about his resignation. He was about to give some secret files about the war against Japan.

It was about the Manhattan Project. But he was kidnapped by a few spies from countries such as the Soviet Union, U.S.A., and the United Kingdom. Even though I would be betraying my country, I wanted to help him. I told him just that. We were lucky that the spies were so focused on Klaus that they forgot to check my pockets. I cut my ropes and Klaus’ too. I pointed my gun at the spies threatening to shoot. One of them did not believe me and charged right at Klaus. Two quick gunshots and he was lying down lifelessly. This proved to be an example to the others as they immediately ran out the back door. Little did I know, that they were bringing back up. The two of us hopped into a tank and rode our way out of there. On our way to the border, we realized that they were faster than tanks.

They started shooting at us too! Thank God tanks are bulletproof. They stood in front of us with barriers but they dived to safety after they realized that we had no intention of stopping. We fired a cannonball right at the border and escaped. But after that, we needed to fake our death so that no one would think about us at all. We later changed our names to Siddhartha and Hans.

When I look back, I never knew how I got out alive but sure was happy I did. I mourned for the spy I had shot, but I had to do what I had to do. I was able to save a good man’s life and I am proud of it.
