Mom's advice

Rina was a teenage girl who used to be very studious in her studies. She was very focused in her work from her childhood. Due to her sincerity and focus towards work her teachers and parents used to love her a lot. But, she was very quiet and introvert since her childhood. So, she didn't had a lot of friends. She used to be very sad for this. Sometimes, some of her classmates who were jealous of her due to her good performance in academics used to mock and bully her to bring her down. She used to come home and cry in front of her mother.

One day she asked her mother, ' Mom, I behave nicely with everyone, help them and I am so sincere about my studies. My teachers love me for this. But, some of my classmates mock , tease and bully me . Even though I never behaved badly with them, why do they behave so badly with me and hurt me? I don't understand. I feel so hurt. Sometimes , I feel like killing them. What should I do mom? Please tell me. I can't bear this anymore.'

Listening to this her mom replied, ' Listen, if people behave poorly with you and you do the same with them to teach them a lesson, then what will be the difference between you and them?'

Rina asked her mom, ' Then what should I do mom to teach them a lesson? '

Her mom replied, ' No need to teach anyone any lesson. Karma is always there for everyone. Just focus on yourself and your work. If you focus on others, you will never be able to reach the position you deserve in your life. So, stop focussing on them and focus on building yourself up and becoming the best version of yourself.'

Hearing this, Rina replied, 'Yes mom, I try to be my best version and I am performing my best in academics. Even my teachers are proud of me. But, they mock me saying I am ugly, I am skinny, I am not good enough. This brings my self confidence down. What should I do about that?'

Her mom replied, 'Listen, no one and nothing is perfect in this world. Everyone and everything has it's imperfections. And these imperfections make us unique and who we are. So, you should never be afraid of your flaws and imperfections, because these flaws only make you "you".And coming to people's opinions, people will always have something or the other to say. No matter how much good you are, some people always have the tendency to look into your faults. That's human nature. So, you should not worry about people's opinions or views about you because people will always have some faults to find. And rather than focussing on being good in people's eyes, focus on being yourself and being good in your own eyes. That's all.'

Her mom's advice inspired Rina very much. From then on, she just focussed on herself and being good in her own eyes, rather than being good in other people's eyes. From then, she never cared about people's opinions about her. She rose up and up in her career focussing on nothing except herself and her work. And after ten years, she was among the top ten business woman in India. Her success got published in various newspapers and magazines. And many journalists came to interview her.

Looking ten years back, she now feels thankful to her mom for her advice. Had her mother not given her such a advice, she would never have reached this position in her life. She would never have dared to not care about people's opinions and follow her goals. She would have remained stuck in the same loop of 'people's opinions'. But, it was all possible due to her mother who inspired her always to be 'herself'...to always be the 'imperfectly perfect' Rina. And that day she understood the true value of her mom's advice.
