The subtle smell of cherry blossoms flutter against the chilly air of January as she stares at his retreating back. Brushing off a growing scowl, Selena edges back along the spiraling marble staircase trimmed with an exotic crimson carpet, as the sound of her onyx shoes echoes along the deepening stairways.

“ I like somebody else”

His deep gray eyes glisten against the seams of moonlight spinning across the balcony.

“You can’t break the engagement” she replies with a wry smirk, arms folded against her velvet robes.

“Convince your parents, then. It’s just a stupid alliance.” he stoops to meet her eyes, making sure she sees the disgust splattered across his beautiful etched eyes.

It’s infuriating, she notes. The fact that he likes someone else. Fighting off the growing heat on her face, she throws open an empty broom closet, and shuts herself against her family, as she tries to claw out his words from before. Selena slides down, her floor length gown draping her slouched body as she buries her face in the cloth. She knew he was trouble, from the first time his dilating gray eyes flashed towards her forest green irises, from the first time she saw him swinging his coat off his shoulders and looking at her, from the first time she felt his breath on her neck, his rough hands poised against her waist.

Sel should have pushed him away when she had the chance.

Casillas and Selena should have never met.

They were never meant to be.
