The sea looked forbidding from here, although it was almost at its narrowest here. Ram stood at the side watching his army trying to construct a bridge across the sea. He was amused as his people kept on throwing stones and the sea continued to swallow them. Although he could have guided them in the construction of the bridge, he did not intervene. He wanted them to discover a way to construct the bridge on their own.

His younger brother, Lakshman, was not so detached. He wanted his brother to intervene and instruct the monkey army in the construction of the bridge. However, Ram stood nonchalantly on the seaside as if he was not concerned about the construction of the bridge, which was going to be the most important factor in winning the war against Ravan.

Lakshman kept on shuffling between the monkey army and Ram, however, nobody was paying any attention to him. He looked at his elder brother as if asking for permission to tell the method of construction to the monkey army. However, Ram shook his head dissuading Lakshman from taking any action in the matter.

The two commanders viz. Nal and Neel, supervising the construction of the bridge were at their wits’ end. They looked toward Ram, who still did not pay any attention to them. He kept on smiling as if goading to them to find a solution on their own.

Lakshman noted that Nal and Neel were in animated conversation. Then he saw Nal writing something on a stone and throwing it into the sea. To his surprise the stone did not sink, rather it floated on the surface. It looked like it was waiting for another stone to join.

Soon, a bridge started forming. On every stone, members of the monkey army were writing something before throwing it in the water. Lakshman walked and stood behind a monkey. As the monkey finished writing, Lakshman read over his shoulder. It was one word, ‘RAM’. He wondered why this had not occurred to him.

He looked at Ram, standing at a distance, smiling. It occurred to him that Ram had known all along what was going to happen.

He remembered the saying, ‘God works in mysterious ways.'
