He remembered the games they both played together when they were children. It was “Untiparattal” a game meant for girls but he played along with the girls in his street. Three holes were made on the earth side by side (two at ends obliguely) and connected to one another at the bottom by a tunnel. The hole in the middle is made smaller than the other two on purpose. The middle hole is filled with the sand and covered by a cloth.
The participants sit on either ends of the tunnel. One of them blows into the tunnel from one end and the person sitting on the other side attempts to catch the cloth that flies along with the air in the tunnel from the middle hole. The game continues with participanting singing song that starts with “Untiparattal…..”. He tried hard to remember but age played tantrums with his memory.
It was exactly 52 yrs back that he saw her for the first time. Though he grew up as a teenager the game of untiparattal never left him. He was seated on the left end of the tunnel. It was the evening of a very hot summer day, though the sun faded the ground emanated extreme heat. He was perspiring with beads of sweat propelling profusely on his cheeks. He didn’t notice the person seated at the opposite end.
He was to start the game, so he prepared himself. He inhaled deeply and with his full force blew the air in to the tunnel. The sand particles scattered in the air blocking his vision partially but he forced to see who is on the other side. The air brushed her face and her neatly kept hair fell over her forehead. As she raised her head, he could see the eyes that dazzled like diamonds and her eye brows that were shallow arched. He couldn’t resist himself from getting infatuated with her ineffable beauty. Soon he got to know her details and their family had moved in to that street a day back.
With the feeling of being vulnerable he found it difficult to express the fact that he was in love with her. It was 50yrs back so love was not common though it wasn’t uncommon. The doubts that he might lose her by expressing his emotions. Then time healed and he went onto express the same and got married to her.
He sat back in his old rocking chair retrospecting himself. As the years passed by there was calmness in their relationship and he loved that calmness. Spending time without planning for the future was something that he liked in their last few years of relationship. When they were young life was in transit with day to day commitments pushing them to their ends. It was after retirement he learnt to value the different positive experiences around him. That actually helped him be satisfied with everything in their relationship. People might say with old age happiness and the ability to express love declines but it was contrary for him.
Now he sat alone staring at the large portrait of her on the wall adorned with garland and lit with the lamp. A sense of remorse sinked in deep on him. Unable to cry he just walked back and forth, time to time staring at the portrait on the wall. It was on that evening as he came back home after a stoll in the city with the dream kit.
After having a light dinner he went to bed with the vr glasses on. Slowly the dreams began to get a shape.
Before the courts of heaven he stood faced with execution for his mistakes in life. The place was dark and it puzzled him on what he heard all through his life about heaven. Heaven was said to have tulip gardens, angels, a sense of aura and serenity. Heaven was to have priceless wealth, precious stones and things mankind can never imagine. All he had before him was darkness. He hovered in vaccuum and floated in absolute emptyness.
It was then that he heard a voice infront of him, but what he could see from the distance was a silhouette. The voice said,” I am the god of darkness, you won’t be knowing me as credits for my work is given to the god who is visible to you”. He wondered scratching his head. Then the voice further went on,” Help me get acquainted with humans and tell about me to the mankind, I will give you your wife back. A second chance to live again peacefully. Think about it”. It sounded godd for him as he nodded his head in agreement.
He woke up from his sleep without realizing that he had a dream.
