Break up …….. the word itself feels fragile. A very modern and trendy word too! Usually we encounter this word very frequently with reference to younger generation where it would have taken a few years to build up a relationship and you hear of break up in no time and more often than not, soon after they “tied the knot”. He laughed silently at his joke. These were some of the thoughts going on in the mind of Mr. Raghavan, 50-year-old who worked as a Legal advisor for a bank. He was coming out from a casual chat with    his friends and one of the topics was about recent sensational breakup of Tollywood’s popular power couple and how the fans were hurt and worried about them.

His wife Sujata crossed through his mind and he was very pleased by mere thought of her . He was very proud of her and very possessive too! He very firmly believed that the bond of marriage between them was very strong and secure. Really also there was no threat to their marriage. They were married for more than 25 years now and only thing missing was that they didn’t have any children and both seemed to have reconciled to the fact. She was a smart lady who was successfully running a business from their home and making good money ! She selling women’s garments just few years ago and was doing very well, with women of started different walks in life being her clients. Since she was her own model and advertising agency, one would always find her in trendy and latest sarees, always presentable and dressed well. The days were going by very smoothly and both were content with life and their work.

That morning Mr. Raghavan got shock of his life when Sujatha threw up a tantrum for not coloring his hair. He always disliked coloring the hair and preferred it to grow grey naturally  over the time. In fact the salt and pepper hair suited him very well and Sujata also seemed comfortable with his choice. Raghavan was unable to fathom why she changed all of a sudden and would not listen. People commented on Sujatha. “ Am I living to see this day? She is always well dressed it is OK but it does not mean she takes control over her husband’s choice also , ”grumbled Sujatha’s Aunt. Slowly one thing lead to another and Raghavan also would not budge and ultimately the marriage ended in a divorce, which was a breakup in current terminology. It ended amicably as they respected each other and neither of them wanted to hurt the other. Money was never in the picture as both were earning.

It was four years since the divorce and It so happened that Mr. Raghavan bumped into Sujatha at a restaurant. She seemed to have married again, her husband Mr. Hari was by her side and they were also accompanied by an 8-year-old girl. She was Hari’s daughter from his first marriage.

Suddenly it dawned on Mr. Raghavan’s mind that the reason for his divorce was not as weird as it appeared to be. Few years before their divorce , Sujatha expressed a wish to consult a doctor and find out the reason for their not having children and see if it would be possible to have a child. Present day Science offered so many possibilities. But Raghavan was not interested about it. Rather, he believed that there is something lacking in him that they did not have children and so he did not want it to come out in the open. Sujatha also covered up for him and did not let the real reason for divorce be known  even to him, let alone to everyone, out of love and respect for Mr. Raghavan . She let everyone believe that the differences between both of them about coloring of hair was the real reason for their divorce. Alas, if only he realized how much Sujatha wanted to be a mother he should have supported her and at least they could have adopted a child to fulfil her longing. Tears welled up in his eyes and as he looked through teary eyes at Sujatha, he could see tears in her eyes ae well, Then he realized that it was not just breakup but in the process her heart was broken as well…
