Zero Is Where Everything Starts

There aren't any who don't remember a time,
When something important was obtained,
And though a variety you will find,
For each person, it is special all the same.

Whether it is a picture of your wife,
Or a letter from your kin,
Whether it's a reminder of some strife,
Or something that you'd wanted to be hidden

There is one variable that plays throughout,
For while to others it appears plain,
Those who'll keep such objects always prove devout
As what it represents will still remain.

For it is the meaning that's gained our appreciation,
For that item whatever it may be,
Throughout those years it's likely taken,
Becomes something different from everything else we see

I am no exception in this regard,
The importance of this outweighs any objection
Even though keeping it may leave me marred
It must be kept under my protection.

Though a shadow is all that'll show,
While ashes may of taken the visage's place
It's far more precious than any will know
Thus that trace you'll find none can erase
