Hope Alive
Hope Alive
We lived another minute, a new hour, an extra day,
When life around us was withering away.
We got to see what they didn't live to see -
More pain and loss and so much misery!
We are still here, playing our helpless part,
As families around are being torn apart.
We try to glue their broken pieces again,
Failing miserably as we go numb in pain.
They were here yesterday, a part of the whole.
What they've left behind is just a gaping hole.
We're here today, yet, we cannot fill
The void that formed when they became still
They took with them much, yet they left behind -
Their memories with us swirling in our mind.
After all, they too were the ones who filled
The void left by their predecessors who were also killed.
We know we cannot bring them back -
They fought bravely, defense being their only attack.
In this war, our weapon is the hope that fills us -
Nothing lasts forever - neither us, nor what kills us.
Each moment we live is a moment we gained -
A privilege, a bargain to keep us sustained.
Our only hope now is to not lose the hope
That we can live to help and heal and cope.
When the war is over, we may not be around.
But as long as we are, to live and love, we are bound.
When it comes for us, we cannot avoid,
But, while we are still alive, let's not be a void.
