Biography, a form of nonfiction that describes the life of an individual. By bringing together all available evidence, including that contained in memory as well as written and oral accounts, this form of literary expression attempts to recreate in words the life of a human being - as understood from the author's historical or personal point of view.

We are thrilled to invite you to participate in the StoryMirror Biography Writing Contest, a contest intended to highlight personal biographies and autobiographies.

Purpose of StoryMirror Biography Writing Contest

What do we learn from these biographies? The priceless lessons of experience.

Every life serves a purpose, and discovering your own purpose can be aided by delving into the lives of others whose purposes have made our lives better or worse. If you wish to excel in your own life, there is no better place to find inspiration than in the lives of those who have changed our world and changed our lives for the better.

Rules

Biography writing

  • Ask the subject for permission to write the biography. The subject can be your friend, relative, famous person, etc. You can also choose to write an autobiography as well.
  • It should be written in past tense. Ending may shift to the present or future tense.
  • Opens with a strong hook to grab the reader’s attention.
  • It should be written in chronological order or flashback style
  • It could cover childhood, upbringing, education, influences, accomplishments, relationships, etc – everything that helps the reader to understand the person
  • It should give specific details about people, places, events, times, dates, etc.
  • It should reflect on how events shaped the subject.
  • It may include some relevant captions/ sayings of the subject.
  • It should conclude with what the subject is doing now or what their legacy will be.

Contest submission

  • It should be of minimum 2,000 words.
  • It should be unique and shouldn’t be posted anywhere prior.
  • The cover should include photo of the person
  • The title of the biography should be <Subject name> - Biography (e.g. Bhagat Singh - Biography)
  • Please use #biography in the tag section.
  • The winners will be decided based on the editorial score and jury.
  • Some important points that may help in writing biography
  • Include basic details like date and place of birth, family information, educational background, professional experience, lifetime accomplishments, major events of life, etc.
  • Focus on notable events, such as the start of a relationship, a dramatic life change or another major turning point. 
  • If the subject of your story is deceased, you'll probably want to cover the events that unfolded before their passing. What legacy did they leave behind and what can people learn from it - should be included.
  • Highlight key moments and interesting events in the person’s life so the reader gets a good sense of what mattered to the person and how they affected the world around them. 
  • Identify a major theme or pattern in the person’s life. Look over your research for any similarities between events or moments in the person’s life. Check for any recurring phrases or situations in the person’s life.
  • You may include following:

Was there something in your subject's childhood that shaped his/her personality?

Was there a personality trait that drove him/her to succeed or impeded his progress?

What adjectives would you use to describe him/her?

What were some turning points in this life?

What was his/her impact on history?

  • Top 2 winners will be awarded a free physical book publishing contract with StoryMirror provided that their stories have more than 30,000 words.
  • Interesting biographies may also get a chance to get featured in a movie. Prior to selection, StoryMirror will notify those writers and sign a legal agreement before proceeding with the movie contracts.
  • All writers who submit a biography of more than 15000 words will be awarded a physical book subject to an editor score of 6.
  • Winners will receive digital certificates of appreciation.
  • All participants will receive a digital participation certificate.
